# Moving to Panama in Your 40s or 50s | Residency Options

By Legal Solutions • 2 minute read

![Moving to Panama in Your 40s or 50s](https://legalsolutionspanama.com/hubfs/Moving%20to%20Panama%20in%20Your%2040s%20or%2050s.jpg)

You can **move to Panama in your 40s or 50s** without a pension if you qualify for another immigration category. For citizens of eligible countries, the Friendly Nations program offers employment, real estate and fixed-term deposit routes. A short-stay remote worker visa may suit a temporary move.

Start with your nationality, how you will earn income and how much capital you can commit. Those factors help determine your options more than your age.

## Can you qualify for Pensionado before retirement age?

Being in your 40s or 50s does not automatically rule out Pensionado. The key requirement is a documented lifetime pension, generally at least US$1,000 per month, from an eligible foreign government, international organization or private company.

[Panamá Digital](https://www.panamadigital.gob.pa/InformacionTramite/solicitud-de-permiso-de-residente-permanente-como-jubilado-y-pensionado) also describes a reduced US$750 monthly pension threshold when the applicant personally owns property in Panama purchased for more than US$100,000. Additional requirements apply when including dependents.

Savings, salary and investment withdrawals do not replace proof of a qualifying lifetime pension. If you do not receive one, focus on other routes rather than waiting for a particular birthday.

## Friendly Nations: three routes to compare

First, confirm that your nationality is eligible. Under the Friendly Nations framework, applicants establish a qualifying connection through employment or investment. The program starts with two years of provisional residency; permanent residency requires a subsequent application and continued eligibility.

**Compare the qualifying basis and its main practical constraint:**

| Route | Qualifying basis | What to consider |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Employment** | Qualifying employment in Panama, supported by the required employer documents. | Confirm the employment evidence and applicable work authorization; a foreign remote job alone is insufficient. |
| **Real estate** | Property in Panama with a minimum qualifying value of US$200,000. | Verify ownership, registered value and permitted financing before purchasing. |
| **Fixed-term deposit** | At least US$200,000 for three years in a bank with a general license operating in Panama; the deposit must be free of liens. | Confirm the bank's certificate meets immigration requirements and plan for the capital commitment. |

The investment thresholds are qualifying amounts, not the total cost of relocation. Budget separately for legal and government fees, document preparation, dependents and living expenses.

A Friendly Nations deposit is not the same immigration category as Self-Economic Solvency. Do not interchange their requirements. Incorporating a company or having a general professional connection also does not, by itself, establish eligibility under the employment route.

For the legal basis, see [Executive Decree 226 of 2021](https://www.migracion.gob.pa/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/DECRETO_226.pdf) and the employment provisions in [Executive Decree 199 of 2021](https://www.migracion.gob.pa/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/DECRETO_EJECUTIVO_199.pdf).

## Keeping your remote job: check the visa and work rules

A salary from a foreign employer does not automatically qualify you for the Friendly Nations employment route. If you choose an investment route, assess separately whether your proposed work is permitted under your status and whether additional authorization is required.

For a temporary stay, Panama's short-stay remote worker visa may be relevant. The published requirements include foreign-source annual income of at least US$36,000 and work whose effects occur abroad. It lasts nine months and can be extended once for the same period. This is a non-resident visa, not a permanent residency program.

Review the [official remote worker visa requirements](https://www.migracion.gob.pa/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/DECRETO_EJECUTIVO_198.pdf) before relying on this option, including insurance and restrictions on accepting local work or services.

Tax treatment needs a separate review in Panama and any other country where you have obligations. Before moving, confirm your employer's approval and ask a tax adviser how your location and work activities affect reporting and tax liability.

## If Friendly Nations does not fit your situation

An ineligible nationality or insufficient investment capital does not mean that waiting for a pension is your only option. Depending on your circumstances, other categories may relate to employment, family ties, professional qualifications or investment. Each has its own requirements.

Use the [residence permits overview](https://legalsolutionspanama.com/en/residence-permits-panama/?hsLang=en) to identify categories worth assessing. If you intend to practice a regulated profession, check licensing and nationality restrictions before building your relocation plan around that work.

## Plan your move around eligibility, documents and costs

Start several months before your intended move as a planning allowance, rather than assuming a fixed approval deadline. Use this sequence:

1. **Confirm the route.** Provide your nationality, income source, employment plans, available capital and details of any accompanying family members.
2. **Request a written checklist and quote.** Separate qualifying investment from government fees, legal fees, translations, authentication and dependent costs.
3. **Prepare documents in the right order.** Common requirements include a passport, criminal record certificate and route-specific financial or employment evidence. Foreign documents may need apostilles or consular authentication and authorized Spanish translation. Confirm validity periods before ordering them.
4. **Coordinate banking and travel.** For a deposit route, confirm bank onboarding and certification requirements before transferring funds. Ask which steps require your presence in Panama and what status covers your stay while the application is processed.
5. **Plan beyond the first approval.** Confirm subsequent applications, ongoing eligibility and travel requirements. Keep accessible funds for housing, healthcare and emergencies outside any committed investment.

## Frequently asked questions

#### Can I move to Panama on savings alone?

Savings can fund your move, but an ordinary account balance is not, by itself, a residency category. Capital may support a qualifying investment route; eligibility depends on how the investment is documented and the requirements of that program.

#### Do I need to invest US$200,000 if I have no pension?

Not necessarily. That threshold applies to the Friendly Nations real estate and deposit routes. A qualifying employment route or another category may fit your circumstances without that investment. Confirm eligibility before committing funds.

#### Should I wait until retirement to apply?

Only if waiting improves your eligibility or financial position. If a suitable category is available now, you can assess it before retirement. Compare the capital commitment, work rules and ongoing requirements with your plans.
