Panama Bank Account for a Visa: When Is It Required?

By Legal Solutions • 2 minute read

A Panama bank account is not a universal requirement for every residency application. The answer depends on your immigration category and how you prove eligibility. If you use a qualifying Panamanian fixed-term deposit, a foreign account cannot replace that deposit. A pension-based application follows different evidence requirements.

Separate three questions: what Immigration requires, what your chosen bank requires to open an account, and whether a local account would make daily life easier. Meeting one set of requirements does not automatically satisfy the others.

When does the residency route require local banking?

For a deposit-based investment route, the eligible institution, deposit amount, term and certification form part of the immigration requirements. Friendly Nations and Qualified Investor have different deposit rules. Do not open a generic savings account and assume its balance qualifies.

For the Pensionado route, the central evidence is the qualifying lifetime pension. The official Pensionado application information explains that requirement; opening a local everyday account is not the same as proving the pension. Ask your lawyer which additional solvency or dependent documents your case needs.

A property- or employment-based application may require financial evidence without requiring the same product as a deposit-based application. Before moving money, request the exact banking evidence needed for your selected pathway.

Can a nonresident or seasonal visitor open an account?

Some banks offer products to nonresidents, but acceptance depends on the bank, account and compliance review. Tourist status does not guarantee approval, and permanent residence is not a blanket prerequisite for every product.

For example, Banistmo’s published Intercuenta requirements include nonresident applicants, but that product requires an existing active primary Banistmo account. Its requirements cannot be treated as a promise that a first account will be approved. Ask specifically about opening your first account as a nonresident and whether you must attend in person.

What documents should you prepare?

Request the bank’s current written checklist. Expect identity documents, your address and contact details, tax-residency information and tax identification numbers, plus evidence of income and source of funds. The bank may request additional identification, references or transaction information according to the product and risk assessment.

Examples of supporting evidence include an employment letter, pension statement, tax return, business records or documents explaining a property sale. A balance statement shows money exists; it may not explain where that money came from. The Superintendency of Banks’ Agreement 1-2026 sets the relevant customer due-diligence framework.

Opening deposit, minimum balance and fees are different

A requested deposit is not necessarily a fee. Clarify what remains your money, what must stay in the account and what the bank will charge.

Term What it means What to ask

Opening deposit

Money credited to your account

Can I withdraw it, and when?

Minimum ongoing balance

Balance required under the product’s terms

What happens if I fall below it?

Bank fee

A charge for a service or account

What is charged once, monthly or per transaction?

Third-party cost

Legal, translation or document expenses

Who charges it, and is it necessary for my case?

Compare the same account type across banks and request the dated tariff, currency, transfer charges and rules for withdrawing or closing the account. For an immigration deposit, also confirm restrictions, early termination and the certification the bank can issue. Avoid choosing from isolated anecdotes about an opening price.

How to choose the account without delaying your application

First, confirm the immigration pathway and required financial evidence with your lawyer. Next, ask eligible banks whether they accept your residency status and source-of-funds profile. Submit a complete banking file, obtain approval and confirm the account’s immigration suitability before committing a large transfer.

For everyday use, compare online access, international transfers, ATM charges, customer support and recurring payments. For seasonal stays, check how the bank handles an overseas address and account inactivity. Practical convenience is a separate decision from visa eligibility.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Can my overseas bank account satisfy the visa requirement?

It may provide useful income or source-of-funds evidence, depending on the case. It cannot replace a qualifying Panamanian deposit where that is the basis of the application.

Which bank is best for a residency application?

There is no universal best bank. The right option must offer the eligible product, accept your applicant profile, provide the required certification and have costs and access conditions that suit you. Confirm these points directly with the bank.

Does opening an account improve my chances of approval?

An ordinary local account does not grant residence or compensate for missing immigration requirements. It matters when it provides the specific evidence your category requires.

Can I start the banking process before becoming a resident?

Potentially, if the bank accepts nonresident applicants for that product. Obtain its current document and attendance requirements first; approval remains subject to its review.
